Glasgow Mac Round-Up: (U10) 15/04

Mark Tenby - Sunday 15th 2007f April 2007

Glasgow Maccabi Under 10s returned to action with a fine win and a narrow defeat this week in balmy conditions at Glasgow Green.

The squad was down to the bare bones due to the school holidays but stand-in keeper Dean Yaffie did very well and young Jay Groundland made quite an impact.

Vale of Clyde were their first opponents and the boys displayed a perfect blend of skill and determination to produce a comfortable victory. Daniel Silver scored a terrific individual goal but Maccabi gave away a sloppy equaliser before captain Curtis Bennett restored the lead.

Vale of Clyde did not give up and it took a fabulous last-ditch tackle from Matt Groundland to maintain the advantage. Maccabi needed a boost and the introduction of Matt’s brother Jay certainly achieved this. Jay was fearless playing against boys two years older than him and twice his size but he terrorised the Vale of Clyde defence and scored two great goals to seal the win.

Final Score: Maccabi 4 Vale of Clyde 1

The second game was against North Kelvin and Maccabi were confident of another victory. They raced into a two goal lead with two poachers’ goals from Matthew Tenby, but this was followed by a crazy minute when the boys gifted their opponents three goals.

As they chased an equaliser, Tenby was unlucky not to get his hat-trick with an audacious flick and both Silver and Bennett brought great saves from the keeper.

When North Kelvin broke, Jacob Ross and Gil Banks found their form at the back and Dean Yaffie made a couple of great saves but the boys tired in the heat and in the last minute, they succumbed to a fourth goal.

Final Score: Maccabi 2 North Kelvin 4
