'Slow and steady wins the race' may have been the motto of the hare-racing tortoise in Aesop's fable, but a fast set of wheels might also have done the trick.

Meet Arava, a 10-year-old African spurred tortoise, who was having a little trouble getting around, not to mention finding a mate, when her hind legs became paralysed.

But after staff at the zoo fitted her with a pair of wheels attached to an undercarriage she's really come out of her shell. "We thought it would be easier for her to live if she had an opportunity to move," a spokesman told TJ.

However, if there's one thing experience has 'tortoise', it's that there's no such thing as a free ride. The spokesman told us that one particular male of the species has become rather besotted with Arava's wheels and blue harness and, after trying to mate with her a little too often, she's feeling a little shell-shocked and has had to be taken back to the clinic for a little rest and recuperation. Mobile she may be, but even so, she can't move quickly enough.
